Bachman continues Qld Derby trail

Sunday 26 April 2015, 6:17pm

The Hawkesbury Guineas will be the next stepping stone to the Group One Queensland Derby for Bachman as he continues his comeback from injury.

Saturday's Group Three race over 1400 metres will be the colt's second start since a mishap on the water walker cost him the chance to run in the Victoria Derby in the spring.

Trainer Gerald Ryan was pleased with his seventh over 1200m at Randwick on April 18 when he finished four lengths from the winner Dublin Lass after being checked in the straight.

"He has done well since his first race and the Queensland Derby is definitely the aim," Ryan said.

"I believe the 2400 metres will be his forte. He is bred to get the distance."

Bachman is by Group One winner All American and his trainer believes he gets his stamina from his dam, Group One placed Ain't Seen Nothin', a daughter of 1995 Victoria Derby winner Nothin' Leica Dane.

Ryan will be two-handed in Saturday's race with Ygritte looking to add the Hawkesbury Guineas to her win in the Gosford equivalent.

The filly has had one start since her win in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) on April 2, running third in the Listed South Pacific (1400m) at Randwick nine days later.

"She is an honest, consistent filly who gives her best," Ryan said.

"She does well in the stable and always tries her best."

Ryan said the $400,000 Inglis Guineas on May 16 would be the target for Ygritte who will be ridden by Sam Clipperton at Hawkesbury with Jason Collett retaining the ride on Bachman.

The Hawkesbury meeting also features two other Group Three races - the Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) and the Darley Crown (1300m) for fillies and mares.
