Patience the key with Supido at Sandown

Wednesday 1 April 2015, 4:43pm

Mick Kent has been rewarded for his patience when Supido scored a first-up win at Sandown.

Immaturity and throat inflammation has restricted the son of Sebring to just two race starts but Kent has always held a high opinion of the colt.

Kent has to keep a close eye on the throat issue but expects Supido will grow out of the problem.

He also is looking at bigger riches than the maiden event the three-year-old was successful in over 1000m on Wednesday.

Ridden by Luke Nolen and sent out a short-priced favourite, Supido ($1.35) scored by a length from Shakespearean Lass ($18) with High Call ($26) six lengths away third in a smart 56.29s.

Kent said he had hopes of Supido making it to the Group Two Euclase Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2.

"He's very young and immature and has been plagued by pharyngitis all his life which is an immaturity thing," Kent said.

"We'll take him very gently this year and then have a bit more of a look at him next year.

"I think up to a mile will suit him but a good fast-run six furlongs would be ideal also.

"He wants to sit off the speed and finish off and that's the way he's been trained his whole life."

Supido ran a debut second at Caulfield on September 20 before jumping to Listed grade at his second start, finishing sixth to Eloping during the Caulfield Cup carnival.

Kent said the colt had a bad case of pharyngitis between the two runs and in hindsight should not have started the horse.

"As soon as I put stress on him it reoccurs," Kent said.

"It's not a good thing to stress the respiratory tract when it's inflamed which can cause problems later on, so we'll just keep monitoring him."
