Amorino after third straight stakes win

Wednesday 1 April 2015, 4:12pm

Amorino will have a different jockey but trainer Archie Alexander is convinced the result can be the same when the sprinter chases his third straight stakes win in the Victoria Handicap at Caulfield.

With Craig Williams riding in Sydney on Saturday, Alexander has called on Mark Zahra to ride Amorino in the Group Three 1400m race.

Williams has won a Group Three and a Listed race on Amorino in his past two starts.

Amorino's 1400m victory at Flemington on March 7 gave rookie trainer Alexander his first Group race win.

Alexander said the jockey booking was well thought out.

"Mark Zahra I think is as close as we're going to get to Craig in terms of riding style," Alexander said.

"Obviously we were really disappointed not to get Craig, as anyone would be when they've ridden the horse twice and won twice, but I wanted a jockey with a similar style.

"Mark is very tidy, very stylish rider and just sits quiet rather than getting after them.

"That's what Craig did. He just sat quiet and let the horse take him, which is what I think Mark will do."

Amorino is on the second line of betting at $7 behind three-year-old Disposition ($3.60) who is coming off a setback which forced him to miss the Australian Guineas.

The capacity field includes a couple of imports from France making their Australian debuts, including Gallante ($14) who won a Group One over 2400m in France last year and is now part of owner Lloyd Williams' team.

Alexander said races such as the Newmarket Handicap were originally considered when Amorino joined his team from Western Australia.

But the trainer scrapped those plans when it took Amorino longer than hoped to settle into his new stable.

The Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane is a consideration if Amorino continues his good form, and Alexander is confident going into Saturday.

"He's in the same sort of form as he was leading into his past two races. I can't fault him at home and he's got a good barrier draw (5)," he said.
