Sydney's premier trainer Chris Waller has had a breakthrough in his bid to establish a Melbourne training base with the announcement he has been given 10 boxes at Flemington.

Victoria Racing Club chairman Michael Burn said the club had granted Waller a lease on the boxes that become available in mid-February.

"I am proud and excited to be given this opportunity at Flemington to become a part of the Victorian racing scene," Waller said.

"It will alleviate us having to have multiple runners in races in Sydney throughout the year and allow us to have a stronger presence during the spring racing carnival.

"Ultimately it will provide even better returns to our loyal owners."

Confusion over Waller's bid for space at Flemington arose in some quarters earlier this month when Darwin trainer Stephen Brown and local Nigel Blackiston leased stables at the course.

Anthony Freedman had previously taken over stables vacated by Nathan Tinkler's Patinack operation.

But the Brown and Blackiston arrangements were privately negotiated with other trainers who owned the leases.

Flemington caters for 22 trainers and around 550 horses.
