Apprentice Sadler takes on tough ride

Friday 21 December 2012, 3:49pm

Leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir has provided a strong show of faith in apprentice Thomas Sadler by handing him the ride on the difficult but speedy Lord of Brazil on Saturday.

Sadler, who will claim 3kg, takes over from experienced jockeys Brad Rawiller and Steven Arnold who steered the in-form six-year-old to his past two wins.

Lord of Brazil notched successive victories at Flemington and Moonee Valley last month and earlier in his preparation won at Seymour, Mildura and Ballarat.

But Weir admitted that Sadler will have a major task aboard his flyer in the Spotless Plate (1420m) on Saturday.

"He's not a simple horse to ride," Weir said. "He pulls hard, he gets hold of the bridle a bit so Tommy will just have to come out a little negative and make sure he gets a bit of cover.

"If that happens I'm sure he'll run well.

"But if he doesn't get cover he just travels a bit strong, although at 1400 (metres) it probably won't matter."

Weir said that Lord of Brazil's immediate future would depend on his performance tomorrow.

"We'll just weigh it up where we go.

"We haven't got anything set in concrete yet. We just want to see how he goes and if he goes well we'll probably push on and go somewhere else," he said.

Weir has moved his four-year-old mare Baremin up in class but is in two minds about her chances in the Spotless Handicap (1420m).

"I don't know whether she's good enough. She's racing well but it's a little step up in class," he said.
