Golden Slipper winner to be spelled

Monday 23 March 2015, 8:41pm

Golden Slipper winner Vancouver will not attempt the juvenile triple crown with trainer Gai Waterhouse keen to protect his three-year-old prospects.

A dominant winner of Saturday's Slipper, the unbeaten Vancouver will come back in the new season to try to win the Cox Plate, the only major race on the Australian calendar Waterhouse has yet to win.

The Waterhouse-trained Pierro in 2012 is the last horse to claim the Slipper, Sires' Produce and Champagne Stakes.

Pierro finished third in the 2013 Cox Plate behind Ocean Park and All Too Hard.

"I'm very mindful of his three-year-old career," Waterhouse said after Vancouver won the Slipper.

"He is a superior colt."

Vancouver beat English and Lake Geneva to give Waterhouse a sixth Golden Slipper win, equalling the record of her father TJ Smith.

Blue Diamond Stakes winner Pride Of Dubai from the Peter and Paul Snowden stable is now the $4.60 favourite for the Sires' Produce ahead of the Waterhouse-trained English at $7.50.

English finished second to Vancouver in the Slipper.
