Ryan Moore to ride Odyssey Moon in Slipper

Monday 16 March 2015, 12:28pm

Rod Northam is excited to be saddling up his first Golden Slipper runner and even more thrilled to be legging up champion jockey Ryan Moore on Odyssey Moon.

The world's highest ranked jockey in 2014, Englishman Moore will be in Sydney on Saturday to ride Cox Plate winner Adelaide if he starts in the George Ryder Stakes.

Moore rode the Coolmore-owned Adelaide to his famous victory in October and claimed the Melbourne Cup on Protectionist.

Odyssey Moon is one of three late entries for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper with connections of Fireworks and Single Gaze also paying up on Monday.

"I've never had a Slipper runner so that's exciting in itself," the Scone-based Northam said.

"James Harron is the bloodstock manager for the owner Dr Bateman and spoke to Coolmore about getting Ryan Moore to ride Odyssey Moon.

"He has won a Cox Plate and a Melbourne Cup and he is the sort of rider who will suit the horse.

"We hope he can be ridden a bit quieter. He is a much better chaser."

Edmund Bateman will be looking for a second Group One win in two weeks after the Gai Waterhouse-trained Wandjina gave him the Australian Guineas on March 7.

While many trainers will be hoping for inside barriers when the draw is done on Tuesday, Northam would like Odyssey Moon to be out towards the middle.

"He has been dictated to by drawing one and two at his last two starts so I'd like somewhere between six and ten," he said.

Odyssey Moon has finished second and third at his past two starts in the Skyline Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes respectively.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver is the $2.80 favourite ahead of the final acceptances ahead of Godolphin's Exosphere at $4.60.

Odyssey Moon is at $51 but Northam expects him to run much better than his price suggests.

"He is a real tough little horse who eats well, travels well and loves a day at the races," he said.
