Winx posts Phar Lap Stakes win

Saturday 14 March 2015, 5:42pm

A confidence-boosting win by Winx in the Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill has fuelled Group One ambitions for the filly.

Saturday's Group Two Phar Lap over 1500 metres, the same distance as the Coolmore Classic on the same program, was the first win since September last year for the Chris Waller-trained Winx.

With her trainer in Melbourne overseeing the Newmarket Handicap win of three-year-old Brazen Beau at Flemington, Peter Tighe, who owns Winx in partnership with Debbie Kepitis, was thinking big.

"She might go on towards the Oaks now," Tighe said.

"It's just a matter of how we get her there. That will be up to the boss.

"I'm just happy to see her win again."

Winx ($2.45 fav) got a little further back than Tommy Berry had intended but swept to the lead in the straight to put 1-3/4 lengths on Hauraki ($7.50) with Supara ($4.60) another short head third.

After her Furious Stakes win last spring, Winx finished second to First Seal in the Tea Rose and Flight Stakes.

She had finished behind her in two starts this campaign and the decision was made to avoid her again in the Coolmore Classic.

First Seal was beaten in a photo finish to the Coolmore but Tighe was happy to have missed that race.

"It's good for her to get her confidence back," he said.

Berry said despite being further back than he wanted, he knew he had the horsepower underneath him.

"I was a bit further back than I wanted to be," he said.

"I just didn't panic. I knew I was on the best horse in the race and rode her accordingly."
