Paceman needs to stand up and be counted in the Pago Pago Stakes to put himself back into Golden Slipper calculations.
Trainers Peter and Paul Snowden have put blinkers on the colt for Saturday's race at Rosehill in a bid to get him back to his best.
He also has a tongue-tie and crossover noseband on since his last start.
Paceman won impressively in November but was well beaten in the Silver Slipper Stakes at his only autumn start.
He was taken back to the barrier trials and finished second, but was pushed along in the straight and Furnaces had his measure in the hit-out at Warwick Farm.
"The horse hasn't performed to expectation this time through and it's up to him," co-trainer Paul Snowden said.
"It's D-Day tomorrow, whether he can take his place in the Slipper or not.
"He needs to win and win well (to go to the Slipper)."
He says Paceman has the talent but has to apply himself and produce it at the races which he hasn't so far this time in.
He said blinkers seemed to have switched him on at home and was hoping the gear helps.
"It's up to the horse," he said.
Damian Browne, winner of the Blue Diamond for the Snowdens on Pride Of Dubai two weeks ago, takes the ride.
The China Horse Club announced on Friday it had bought into Pride of Dubai and would race the colt with Coolmore and Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum.
Pride Of Dubai is expected to have his next start in the Group One ATC Sires' Produce Stakes.
