Stablemates Typhoon Red and Kempelly resume at the Gold Coast, ahead of what trainer Kevin Kemp hopes is a history making feat later in their campaigns.
The two run in Saturday's Carbine Club Gold Coast Stakes (1200m), the first step towards a repeat of their quinella in their home town sprint, the Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba.
This year the Weetwood Hcp (1200m) on May 2 will be the highlight of a stand-alone meeting Saturday meeting for the first time at Toowoomba.
Typhoon Red beat Kempelly into second place in last year's Weetwood and Kemp is sure they are both ready to repeat the performance.
The Weetwood is nearly 100 years old and stablemates have never run the quinella twice.
"They have pleased me in the past few weeks," Kemp said.
"Typhoon Red won a trial in good style beating Michael Nolan's smart horse Upstart Pride.
"Kempelly has gone along well and he does handle the Gold Coast pretty well."
Typhoon Red hasn't started since finishing well back in the Listed Spear Chief Hcp (1500m) in May last year.
The gelding is a noted first-up horse and will have a change of rider with apprentice Geoff Goold taking over from regular jockey Nozi Tomizawa.
"Geoff rode him in the trial and knows the horse. He can't claim but he seems to ride the Gold Coast very well," Kemp said.
Kempelly had a summer campaign and is having his first start since his third to Gundy Son at the Gold Coast on January 3.
"He hasn't won at the Gold Coast but he has been placed three from three tries there. I would be disappointed if he didn't run a race," Kemp said.
"Chris Whitely will ride him and he knows the Gold Coast track very well."
Typhoon Red and Kempelly will each have only one more run before the Weetwood on May 2.
"There are almost weekly 1200 and 1350 metre races at Doomben in April so we will have no trouble finding the right lead up race."
The popular Kemp was in the winners's circle on Wednesday when Mr Alfranco won the apprentice series race.
"Mr Alfranco is a nice horse who just keeps improving. We think he can make a good middle distance horse later on," Kemp said.
