Weighty issue for Munce-trained Perplexity

Thursday 12 March 2015, 11:19am

A major rescaling of the weights is the major worry for Chris Munce as ex-Sydneysider Perplexity tries to give the former champion jockey his first Saturday metropolitan winner as a trainer.

Munce has Perplexity in the Trevor Bailey Racing Stables Handicap (2200m) at the Gold Coast with senior jockey Ryan Wiggins to ride.

Queensland uses a handicapping system where the highest-rated horse is given an automatic topweight of 59kg and the rest of the field is weighted down from it.

The system often produces a result where horses who would normally be on the minimum end up with much bigger weights.

Munce was bemused when Perplexity was weighted on 58kg.

"They rescaled the race a whopping nine kilograms so instead of getting the 54 kilos I was expecting we got 58 kilos and second topweight," Munce said.

Perplexity has had two starts for Munce, finishing second to Black Jet at Doomben and before filling the minor placing at the Gold Coast over 1800m two weeks ago.

"He really is looking for the 2200 metres now," Munce said. "I just hope it turns into a genuine staying test."
