Macdonald seeking first Adelaide Cup

Sunday 8 March 2015, 1:56pm

Leon Macdonald has won many of Australia's top races but until now the Adelaide stalwart has never had a runner in his home town Cup.

The Hall of Fame trainer will double his chances with Too Cool To Fool and Gossip Guru and while he is not sure if they have the class to win, he knows they have the staying ability for the 3200m race.

The Group Two Adelaide Cup is one of only a handful of features left over the Melbourne Cup distance and is the main event on Monday at Morphettville.

"I've never had one good enough to run in it and I don't know if I have now," Macdonald said.

"But I know they can both stay so that gives them their chance."

Stable jockey Clare Lindop takes the ride on Too Cool To Fool who is an $18 chance while Ronnie Stewart rides outsider Gossip Guru ($61).

Taiyoo is the dominant favourite with five wins from his past five starts and seven from his past eight.

From the stable of reigning Melbourne premier trainer Darren Weir, Taiyoo goes to the race on the back of his Group Three win in the Lord Reims.

He beat Cup second favourite, former Sydney stayer Lucky Lucky Lucky in that race with Gossip Guru and Too Cool To Fool filling third and fourth respectively.

Lucky Lucky Lucky's new trainer Tony McEvoy believes he will be up to the task although he rates Pelicano a better horse at his best.

"Pelicano is the best horse of my two but probably not in career best form," he said.

"I'm not sure he would need to be in this sort of race. It doesn't look a very strong race to me.

"And, Lucky Lucky Lucky is in great form at the moment and all the signs are that he will run the trip.

"They are fit and well and I'm looking forward to it."
