Cheers as Phrases wins Listed race

Saturday 7 March 2015, 3:16pm

The Bindi Cheers method of training is not for everyone but it works for the Taree horsewoman who has celebrated a Listed win at Randwick.

Cheers is known for backing her horses up week after week rather than galloping them hard between races, something that works well with the much-travelled Phrases, winner of Saturday's Randwick Stakes (2000m).

As his trainer, owner, strapper and close mate, Cheers had almost resigned herself to a second-place cheque when Phrases ($31) crossed the line locked with Self Sense ($6).

But the durable five-year-old had stuck his nose in front.

"I was hoping he could hear my voice over the last 200 metres," Cheers said.

"He is my mate and tries hard all the time."

Cheers was not sure if Phrases would be back for other races over the carnival.

"I don't know. He goes round every week so we'll find something," she said.

"He's entered for a race in Brisbane next week so we might go there."

Pajaro ($6) finished 1-1/4 lengths behind the leading pair with Wellington Cup winner Maygrove fourth.

Jockey Jason Collett has grown up in a racing stable and appreciated the win as much as Cheers.

"There are no rules to training horses and what Bindi does works," Collett said.

"It's fantastic. She is such a positive person and it's great for someone to come from the country and win at Randwick."
