Lucky Liberty ready for first stakes test

Unbeaten three-year-old Lucky Liberty puts his Australian Guineas credentials on show when he steps up to Group company for the first time in the CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington.

Lucky Liberty shares the second line of betting for next month's Group One Australian Guineas (1600m), having earned his high place in the market with his third win from from as many starts in his first city test at Flemington on January 31.

After that win, trainer Henry Dwyer gave the gelding a week away from the stable, keeping him up to the mark with work on a water walker.

Dwyer is convinced Lucky Liberty has the talent to measure up in Saturday's Group Three 1400m race.

"I think he's up to that class," Dwyer said.

"With the condition he's in we'd have to go in with some confidence."

Lucky Liberty raced wide last start at Flemington over 1420m but still proved too strong, adding to impressive wins at Mornington and Sale.

Dwyer pinpointed the CS Hayes Stakes after Lucky Liberty's most recent win and also had a fleeting thought about putting him in Saturday's Group One weight-for-age CF Orr Stakes won by Dissident.

He decided against it, believing Lucky Liberty would be better suited given an easier week after his last-start win and with three weeks into the CS Hayes.

Dwyer said Lucky Liberty was close to his peak for his maiden in late December and had to sustain that for three runs.

"To sustain that for another five weeks to the Guineas from his last run was going to be a pretty big ask so I just thought having that quiet week in between would help him out a bit," he said.

Dwyer could not be happier with Lucky Liberty ahead of Saturday's race and says his fitness levels are about 95 per cent.

"And he'll be 100 per cent for the Guineas," he said.

The Chris Waller-trained Kermadec, who shares the second line of Guineas betting with Lucky Liberty, is among 24 nominations for Saturday's race along with former WA gelding Disposition who makes his first start for new trainer Wez Hunter.

Disposition was second in the Group One Kingston Town Stakes at his most recent start.
