Fontiton ran the fastest time but rival trainer Mark Riley insists his colt Of The Brave can only get better.
That's how two important juvenile races unfolded at Caulfield on Saturday as Fontiton kept favouritism for the Blue Diamond Stakes with Of The Brave a $5 third pick for the $1 million race.
Fontiton ran almost one second faster in her Prelude win than Of The Brave did in his victory.
But trainer Mark Riley, who has a date with the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Monday week, isn't giving up on Of The Brave winning Victoria's richest two-year-old race.
"Times say we can't beat Fontiton but watching her and seeing what Robert (Smerdon) has done with her leading into the race, she hasn't got the improvement (Of The Brave) has," Riley said.
"He's earned his place and he was very vulnerable today.
"They went very hard and he's done it all the way."
Jockey Stephen Baster said the colt didn't begin as well as he envisaged.
"I had to give him a dig and it got him over-racing," Baster said.
"He didn't want to come back under me, he thought it was time to go flat out.
"After doing so much wrong he did a really good job to hold them off."
Co-trainer Paul Snowden said he was satisfied with Pride Of Dubai's run to finish a close second after the colt settled further back than expected.
"He's had to make a 600-metre run," Snowden said.
"Knowing where the horse is at it gives us a great confidence going forward."
Chad Schofield, who rode the third placed Sampeah, said he would recommend the colt have blinkers added despite his mount running an impressive last 400m.
