Powerful Saga digs in for hard-fought win

Saturday 14 February 2015, 3:17pm

Gold Coast two-year-old Powerful Saga is the easiest going horse in trainer Helen Page's stables but he showed he also liked a fight in winning at Doomben on Saturday.

Powerful Saga ($6.50) wore down the favourite Tibrogargan Miss ($1.85) to score by a 1/2 length in the Sky Racing.Tv Handicap (1050m).

Page said she could not remember training a horse who was as easy to handle as Powerful Saga.

"Laidback is the way to describe him but as you saw in his win at his first start at the Gold Coast and again today he can enjoy a fight," Page said.

Page will now look at starting Powerful Saga in a $100,000 QTIS restricted race at the Gold Coast on March 14.

She also trained several other horses out of Powerful Saga's dam Jessepic including the short-course specialist Power Of George who won five races.

"But I am sure Powerful Saga being by Royal Saga will get at least 1200 metres . He is so relaxed in his races," Page said.

Winning jockey Jim Byrne made it an early double when he led all the way to win on the favourite Best Of The Rest ($1.65) in the XXXX Gold Handicap (2200m).

Best Of The Rest, who ran a class record, has won both his starts for trainer Tony Gollan who will aim the gelding for a similar race in a fortnight.

"We will try to get his rating up in the coming weeks so we might be able to look at some winter carnival staying races for him," Gollan said.
