Three-year-old Bascule will have multiple gear changes in an attempt to bring out his best in the Autumn Stakes.
The Chris Waller-trained colt made mistakes in Manfred Stakes at Sandown, most noticeable when laying in when sixth to Java.
"We've had a couple of gear changes on him and we've put a cross-over noseband on him and some pacifiers," Waller's Melbourne stable representative Justine Hales said.
"Hopefully he'll settle a little bit better and run home a bit more genuinely this time."
Bascule, a winner of three of his six starts, will be ridden by Damien Oliver and is a $12 chance.
He has been nominated for the Australian Guineas but would need to prove himself at Caulfield on Saturday to confirm those Group One plans.
David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have two runners, including Hong Kong Captain.
The decision to run Hong Kong Captain means Hayes is unlikely to have a leading chance in the CS Hayes Stakes, a race named for his late father, at Flemington on Saturday week.
"I switched because I like the flexibility of the Autumn Stakes," Hayes said.
He said if Hong Kong Captain was looking more like a 2000m-type horse then he could head to the Autumn Classic (1800m) in two weeks but if he was dominant he would go straight to the Group One Australian Guineas.
