Winning Walker slapped with $1000 fine

Wednesday 11 February 2015, 5:43pm

Jockey Michael Walker was handed a $1000 fine after his winning ride aboard Hennessey Rock at Mornington on Wednesday.

Walker pleaded guilty after being charged with failing to ride Hennessy Rock out to the best of his ability between the final 130m and 60m in the Bowman & Company Plate (1200m).

At this stage of the race Walker had three sustained looks to the inside of the track to the big screen and was confident of cruising to an easy win.

However Grande Rosso made a sustained charge at Hennessy Rock and got to within a short half-head of snatching victory.

Stewards had the option of handing out a reprimand, a fine or a suspension after charging Walker under rule 137(b).

Walker admitted he had "mucked up" in not riding Hennessy Rock out although he claimed a hip injury had caused him some discomfort during the race.

But Walker did not use the injury as an excuse for not fully riding out his mount.

Walker told stewards that he had made a mistake but had still won the race.

"I don't have any excuse for it," Walker said.

In issuing Walker with the fine, stewards took into account his guilty plea, his forthright evidence, his good record and that the fact his mount won the race.

Stewards said Walker's actions could have had serious repercussions and in the fining the jockey they declared "it was a penalty to him but also a deterrent to other riders".

Walker had two other rides at Mornington, winning aboard Jurasound in the Mornington Soul Pattinson Handicap (1500m) and finishing fourth aboard I'm An Outoftowner in the Bayside Suzuki Handicap (1200m).

Jockey Ryan Maloney who secured a pick-up ride aboard He's A Magician in the Bowman & Company Plate was suspended for seven meetings on a careless riding charge aboard the gelding.

His suspension will commence after the Caulfield meeting on Saturday and he can resume on Saturday, February 21.
