Fontelina late nomination for Newmarket

Friday 30 January 2015, 5:59pm

Fontelina, a dual Group Two winner over 1200m at Flemington, has been added to Newmarket Handicap entries.

The Anthony Cummings-trained sprinter, who has been sidelined with a leg injury since last season, is the only late nomination for the $1 million Newmarket Handicap on March 14.

Initial entries for three Group One Flemington features were taken on Tuesday and there were no late entries for the Australian Cup or Australian Guineas.

The Newmarket is set to feature a clash between the world's three top ranked sprinters for 2014 - Terravista, Lankan Rupee and Chautauqua.

Fontelina was beaten a nose in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley last autumn at his most recent start, the second time in his career he has been denied in a photo finish to a Group One race in Melbourne.

He won the Yellowglen Stakes at Flemington in the spring of 2012 and 2013 but has been unplaced in the past new Newmarket Handicaps.

Chautauqua, who split winner Terravista and third-placed Lankan Rupee in the Darley Classic in November, has been installed $4 favourite with the TAB.

His stablemate Deep Field is on the second line at $5 with Terravista while Lankan Rupee and Group One-winning three-year-old Brazen Beau are at $7.

They are the only five runners under double figure odds while Fontelina is at $26.

Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist is the $5 early favourite to win the Australian Cup ahead of Godolphin's import Contributer at $6.

Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win heads the Australian Guineas market at $7 but is more likely to run in the Randwick Guineas in Sydney on the same day.

Sandown Guineas winner Petrology, who ran home strongly for second in Monday's Manfred Stakes at Sandown, is on the second line of Australian Guineas betting at $9.
