Mossfun second in barrier trial

Tuesday 27 January 2015, 4:37pm

Golden Slipper winner Mossfun has made her first public appearance since April, running second in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm.

Tuesday's heats were abandoned because of rain after Mossfun's trial, the fifth of the morning on a heavy track.

Mossfun finished three-quarters of a length behind Golden Slipper fifth-placed Memorial in the 800m heat.

A virus halted Mossfun's spring before it began and the Hawkes training team sent her to the spelling paddock with a view to the autumn.

Chris Waller's Group One winning three-year-old stablemates Brazen Beau and Preferment were not asked to do too much in Memorial's trial and finished at the tail of the eight runners.

Brazen Beau won the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 1, the same day Preferment took out the Victoria Derby.

Waller said the Australian Derby in early April was the aim for Preferment while Brazen Beau would take on older horses in the Lightning Stakes and Newmarket Handicap.

The plan after those two sprints is the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot which will be his swan song.

In December, Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud secured the colt for stallion duties and Brazen Beau will join the roster for this year's Australian breeding season.

The Australian Turf Club re-opened nominations for Friday's Randwick trial session to accommodate horses who did not get a start after Tuesday's wash-out.
