RV moves to expedite cobalt investigation

Friday 16 January 2015, 5:18pm

Racing Victoria will pour its resources into a swift conclusion to its investigation of high cobalt levels in horses from three leading Melbourne stables.

Horses in the care of Peter Moody, Mark Kavanagh and Danny O'Brien were all named this week as having returned elevated levels of cobalt in swabs taken during the spring carnival.

RV chief executive Bernard Saundry said on Friday the governing body had redirected people from the Integrity Department to work on the cobalt case.

He said the chief priority over the coming weeks was to examine all aspects of the circumstances that led to the elevated levels of cobalt.

"We recognise that it is in the best interests of all of the parties involved that the investigations are conducted as swiftly and comprehensively as possible," Saundry said.

"Investigations of this nature are often complex and can involve an extensive number of interviews, a review of stable practices, analysis of stable medications and supplements, and horse samples.

"We have redeployed our resources to strengthen our compliance and investigation team for an effective and timely resolution to these investigations."

Saundry said it was important to note no charges had been laid against the three trainers and RV would make no comment on the cases until the investigation was completed.
