Magic Millions make or break for Micucci

Friday 2 January 2015, 3:14pm

It will be make or break for Micucci when she lines up at Rosehill to try to force her way into the Magic Millions Classic.

The filly earned $4,150 for her debut fourth at Rosehill on December 20 and needs to win Saturday's 2YO Plate to make the field for the $2 million race at the Gold Coast a week later.

Micucci is raced by a group of women including well-known owner Debbie Kepitis, and is also in line for a share of a $500,000 Magic Millions bonus.

The extra money is on offer to connections of the first four horses home owned by female-only syndicates.

Trainer Chris Waller was encouraged by Micucci's first start when she finished 1-1/2 lengths behind Ottoman who was immediately promoted to the head of Golden Slipper markets.

"If she wins and wins well then she would go to the Magic Millions," Waller said.

"That bonus is there as well so that's an added temptation."

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Giulietta is the early favourite at Rosehill to make a winning debut which would also put her into the Magic Millions field.

Waller has two other youngsters in the race - Stimac and Encosta Line - who could be threats to Micucci's chances.

"They are three different types of horses and it's hard to choose between them," Waller said.

Stimac has had one start, finishing fifth in the Breeders' Plate in October while Encosta Line is making his debut on the back of a recent winning barrier trial.

Among Waller's older brigade at Rosehill is last-start winner Kristy Lee, Forever Crazy and Windjammer who are opponents in the Schweppes Handicap (1350m).

"Kristy Lee has come through really well and the other two are also going well," Waller said.

"But we all have to beat Vashka."

A four-year-old from the Godolphin stable, Vashka is aiming for his fifth-straight win and is an odds-on favourite.
