Trainer Kelly Schweida believes it will be a case of now or never when he tries to teach the flying Agitate to race off the pace on Saturday.
Schweida's decision to change tactics on Agitate adds to an already intriguing Bat Out Of Hell (900m) at the Gold Coast.
The race known as the short-course championship of Queensland and has attracted a field of genuine speed horses.
Agitate who has been on the pace in all 16 of his race starts was expected to be right up there with the quickest out of the barriers.
However, Schweida said it was a perfect race to teach Agitate to race from behind.
"I mean if you can't take a sit in this race you are never going to be able to get a sit. I haven't seen a race with so much pace in years."
Agitate, who will be having his first start since June, has drawn barrier two and will be ridden by Glen Colless.
Schweida said he had been tossing up whether to give Agitate a barrier trial and bring him back through a 1000-metre race at the Sunshine Coast in two weeks.
"But I thought the 1000 metres up there might have been a bit tough so we will go with the Bat Out Of Hell which should be perfect."
Meanwhile, Schweida will get a clearer picture of the future of his three-year-old Glorious Red after Saturday.
Glorious Red won at 1600m at her previous start and Schweida is debating whether to step her up to middle-distance races.
