Bold Circle on trial for Magic Millions

Wednesday 31 December 2014, 2:16pm

Injury robbed Bold Circle of the chance to run for a share of $2 million in the Magic Millions Classic, but a year on trainer David Payne is looking at another rich Gold Coast race.

Bold Circle ran third on debut in the 2013 Breeders' Plate and beat Sheer Style and subsequent Magic Millions winner Unencumbered at Rosehill before knee problems prompted a lengthy spell.

The colt runs in an open benchmark 70 over 1200 metres at Randwick on Thursday in preparation for the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) on January 10.

Trainer David Payne was pleased Bold Circle's first-up performance of his summer campaign when he finished last of six runners over 1100m at Randwick on December 13 but was beaten just 3-1/2 lengths on a rain-affected track.

Payne expects improvement from Bold Circle on top of the ground.

"If he goes well and I expect him to, then he will definitely go to the Magic Millions Guineas," Payne said.

"He is a very good colt on his day and if he gets to the Gold Coast he can give it a shake."

Bold Circle remained a $21 chance on Wednesday for the Guineas with Queensland filly Hijack Hussy the solid $3.40 favourite despite her upset defeat in the Vo Rogue Plate on Saturday.

The Tony Gollan-trained Hijack Hussy just failed to catch outsider Mywayorthehighway after getting a long way early back and skirting the field around the turn.

Payne also Empress Elect and Bomber Brown running at the Randwick New Year's Day meeting with the latter a potential Australian Derby contender.

A son of Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, Bomber Brown developed some hoof issues after winning an 1800-metre 2YO maiden in May and Victoria Derby plans were aborted.

He ran an even race when he returned on December 20 to finish three lengths sixth in a 1400-metre race at Rosehill won by Testashadow.

He steps up to 1600m on Thursday.

"He is over his feet problems now and will be better the further he goes," Payne said.

Apprentice Koby Jennings' 3kg claim will give Bomber Brown some relief from his designated 59.5kg.
