Racing broadcasts return to TAB agencies

Tuesday 30 December 2014, 6:36pm

Vision of major thoroughbred meetings has been restored to TAB agencies, representing a minor breakthrough in the impasse between Tabcorp and TVN over broadcast rights.

TAB agencies accepted coverage of Canberra and Bairnsdale gallops meetings on Tuesday after a deal was brokered between Racing NSW, Racing Victoria and Tabcorp.

"At the moment it is not on Sky Racing 1. It is on another screen but at this point until TVN is dissolved it is the best we'll be able to do," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys said.

Mr V'Landys said negotiations were continuing to have racing beamed into NSW hotels.

The only place (the racing picture) is not going to at the moment is to about 300 pubs and within the next couple of days I'm hoping that is solved as well," he said.

Restoration of racing broadcasts into TABs has been described as a stop-gap measure to stem the loss of wagering revenue as punters have been starved of race vision on meetings in NSW and Victoria.

"The deals in place for the moment are all interim until the divorce (between NSW and Victorian racing bodies) happens in the next few weeks," Mr V'Landys said.

TVN has owned the broadcast and digital rights to all NSW thoroughbred races.

But the racing industry-owned station rejected Tabcorp's offer for the rights after a series of short-term deals, resulting in vision of NSW and Victorian races being restricted to the TVN channel.

The deadlock escalated late last week when NSW's TVN representations broke ranks with the board, declaring their intention to negotiate with Tabcorp.
