Samantha Clenton wins again for Waller

Saturday 20 December 2014, 4:58pm

If Samantha Clenton wants to be noticed, she is going the right way about it.

The apprentice jockey had her second ride for premier trainer Chris Waller on Saturday to maintain a perfect strike rate after winning on her first a week earlier.

The 21-year-old has just moved from the country to the stable of leading Newcastle trainer Kris Lees and is making trainers sit up and take notice.

Waller admits to being a little slow to get on the bandwagon but is a fan after Kristy Lee's win at Rosehill, a week after Beyond Thankful's Randwick victory.

"Pat Webster kept telling me I should use her. He had identified Samantha early and knew she had something," Waller said.

"I was a bit slow to catch on."

Randwick trainer Webster is also employed by Racing NSW as a mentor in the Racing NSW industry training scheme.

Waller said the obvious advantage with Clenton was her 3kg claim but more importantly she had handled two difficult horses well.

"Kristy Lee is not an easy ride. She is a bit quirky and needs a bit of loving," he said.

"The horses ran for Samantha and she is a very level headed girl."

The win was Kristy Lee's first since June and she battled tenaciously to get past Stolen Kiss and claim the 1200m benchmark 80 by a short head.

Clenton said she knew Kristy Lee had a tendency to hang in her races but she behaved herself pretty well.

"She got through the gaps and didn't hang too badly for me," she said.

"Things are going really well for me - better than I expected."
