Rodd off to Singapore next week

Friday 19 December 2014, 3:49pm

Jockey Michael Rodd is preparing to farewell Melbourne racing ahead of a new challenge in Singapore.

Rodd will have his final rides for the year at Flemington on Saturday, three days before he leaves Australia.

Based in Melbourne for the past eight years and without the backing of a stable, Rodd says it is the right time to go overseas and he starts a three-month contract on January 1.

"I just want to get there, work hard and hopefully get an extension," Rodd said.

"There's nothing happening here for me and I'm just looking for a new challenge.

Rodd has won 30 Group One races including two of the biggest, the 2007 Melbourne Cup on Efficient and the 2008 Cox Plate on Maldivian.

With the hot and humid conditions in Singapore, Rodd says he hopes to ride a little lighter than what he has in recent months.

He has been in contact with Australian trainers Michael Freedman and Cliff Brown and also various owners to secure rides before the commencement of his licence.

Another group of connections Rodd has kept in touch with are the owners of classy colt Rich Enuff who he will again partner in the autumn.

"I'm really keen to come back and ride him," he said.

"I wasn't sure about the rules - whether it had to be a Group One race - but apparently you can come back for anything.

"Races are on a Saturday down here so I can fly down after the races on a Friday night and fly back again for the Sunday races."

Rodd will have his last two rides before going to Singapore aboard Houdini The Great and King Of Manners at Flemington.
