Tim Bell to ride Whiskey Allround

Wednesday 17 December 2014, 2:46pm

Tim Bell has avoided a difficult decision about his mount in the Lough Neagh Stakes with trainer Tony Gollan making the call regarding his two runners.

Bell has been Whiskey Allround's regular rider but has also been on Gollan's other Lough Neagh entrant, Someday, at his past two starts.

Gollan said he had told Bell to ride Whiskey Allround on Saturday while Tegan Harrison will be on Someday.

"Whiskey Allround is a big strong horse and he can be a bit headstrong. But he has an affinity with Tim and I felt it was the best way to go," Gollan said.

"Tegan knows Someday as she rode him in a jump-out before he began this campaign. She is the type of rider who will suit him."

Gollan accepted with Whiskey Allround in the Lough Neagh (1350m) instead of the open 1200m handicap.

"I have been looking to get Whiskey Allround out over more ground and this is a Listed race worth $175,000," he said."

"It is a perfect chance to test him as a possible winter carnival horse for next year."

Whiskey Allround is unbeaten in three restricted class runs from a spell and Gollan was heartened by his last start win in a Class Six at Doomben two weeks ago.

"He deserves a go at black type races. His time in winning a Class Six last time was faster than the Listed George Moore Stakes winner on the same day," Gollan said.

"I know you often can't take much out of times but it did show he is a class act."

Gollan has always had a big opinion of Whiskey Allround who won his first three starts as a two-year-old and ran second to top filly Sweet Idea in the 2013 Silver Slipper at Rosehill.

"He lost his way a bit as a three year old but now he is four he has really matured," Gollan said.

The trainer is also pleased with Someday who didn't have a lot of luck when second to Big Money in the George Moore Stakes two weeks ago.

"He will be a lot better at the 1350 metres and he meets Big Money better at the weights," he said.
