Singapore jockey Jacky Low dies in smash

Monday 10 December 2012, 6:22pm

Singapore jockey Jacky Low Shi Hua has died from multiple injuries suffered in a road accident on Sunday.

The Singapore Turf Club said the 30-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident involving his motorbike and a car.

Police said the driver of the car had been arrested for allegedly causing the death by performing a negligent act and investigations were ongoing.

A former top apprentice who learned his trade in Perth, Low began riding at Kranji in 2007 and rode his first winner there aboard My Hurricane in August that year.

After being indentured to Don Baertschiger, and then his son Shane, Low graduated to senior ranks in June this year.

He rode a total of 63 winners, the first four in Perth, and rode in Singapore on Friday.

Shane Baertschiger said he and his father were both devastated.

"Jacky was with us for seven years after coming through the STAR program," Baertschiger said.

" He was part of the family and the whole stable is really feeling the effects."

Low leaves behind a wife and four young children.
