Audino cements status as turf bargain buy

Saturday 13 December 2014, 2:19pm

Inexpensive Audino continues to be a money spinner for trainer Robbie Laing and wife Rachael after landing a hat-trick of wins on Saturday.

After wins at Cranbourne and Sandown, Audino backed up for the third-straight week with victory in the Dorevitch Pathology Handicap at Flemington.

Ridden by Jordan Childs, Audino ($3.50) scored a short-head victory over Epic Saga ($3.80) with Tallat ($11) 1-3/4 lengths away third.

A $2500 purchase, Audino has $160,000 in prize money of which more than $110,000 has been banked at his past three outings.

"We call him Father Christmas at home," Laing said.

Never one afraid to back-up his horses, Laing will now look to the $120,000 Lord Stakes (1600m) at Sandown on Boxing Day.

Laing thought the Lord Stakes, usually run at Caulfield, was over 1800m and was surprised when told it was over 1600m.

"That suits us even better," he said.

Audino can be difficult to train and spends most of his time in a paddock in the company of a pony, but had done so well during the week that Laing gave the gelding a dash up over 600m on Thursday morning.

Laing praised the ride of Jordan Childs although he said the gelding should have been allowed to roll from the 700-metre mark.

"It was Jordan's first ride on him and he didn't really know him," Laing said.

"They didn't run very quick time and he can run quicker than that.

"If he was allowed to roll from the 700 (metres) I'm sure he would have been a fair way in front and they would have struggled to pick him up.

"Jordan is so tall. He rides well and just as well we claimed the three (kilos) as the margin wasn't great."
