More black-type success for Lees in Mode

Saturday 6 December 2014, 5:06pm

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees scored another hit-and-run black-type raid at Doomben when Savoureux scored a last-stride win in the Listed Mode Stakes (1200m).

Despite racing wide for most of the race, Savoureux ($6.50) overhauled Tales Of Fashion ($21) in the last stride to win by a head at Doomben.

Hijack Hussy, the $2.70 favourite, strengthened her claims for next month's Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast when she stormed home from last to finish third, three-quarters of a length away.

Lees won the Listed Travel Associates Classic last week with Brook Road who will be joined in the spelling paddock by Savoureux.

"The aim will be to tip her out into the paddock then give her one run at Easter then head back up here for the carnival," said Joe O'Neill, whose Prime Thoroughbreds Syndicate races the filly.

"We bought her at the Inglis Classic sale and although she was the nicest yearling she was the hardest to syndicate.

"At $65,000 she was expensive for a Nadeem but she has a great pedigree and is a very progressive filly."

Jockey Damian Browne rode Savoureux in a positive manner but believes that's not the best way to ride her.

"I was caught in no-man's land and had to make a decision so I elected to put her in the race," he said.

"She gives me the feeling that she'll be better ridden with a sit further back in the field but she's all guts."

O'Neill also races Hijack Hussy and was delighted with the filly's barnstorming finish.

"Her run was phenomenal and she'll run in the Vo Rogue Plate over 1350 metres here in a fortnight which will top her off for the Magic Millions Guineas," he said.
