Northam hoping trip north is on the Money

It's not the interstate campaign his trainer first had in mind but Big Money's return to Queensland can help shape the rest of the sprinter's season.

In contention for a start in last month's Winterbottom Stakes in Perth, trainer Rodney Northam ditched the Group One bid when Big Money failed at Flemington on Victoria Derby day.

"We were originally thinking about going to Perth until he was a bit disappointing in the Group Two in Melbourne," Northam said.

Big Money finished among the tailenders behind the unbeaten Deep Field at Flemington, although Northam is reluctant to mark his stable star too harshly.

"I was really confident until watching the Coolmore (Stud Stakes) when they all came down the outside because the inside was the wrong place to be," Northam said.

"As it turned out drawing the one barrier was probably the worst thing that happened. He was simply on the wrong part of the track."

Big Money returned to Northam's Scone stable with the trainer content to bide his time with the Ramornie Handicap winner until Saturday's Group Three George Moore Stakes at Doomben.

"I gave him an easy week after his run in Melbourne, four or five days in the paddock at home and then just trained him up for this race," Northam said.

Big Money will revisit a winter rivalry he enjoyed with Cape Kidnappers as they vie for favouritism in the $200,000 race.

Cape Kidnappers had the better of Big Money in the Lightning Handicap but the result was reversed in the Healy Stakes as they emerged as two of the most promising sprinters from this year's winter carnival.

"A lot of the horses he races he's raced against before," Northam said.

"We take on Cape Kidnappers again. They've had a couple of nice little duels but hopefully it will work out our way on Saturday."

The George Moore and the Lough Neagh Stakes will be pivotal races in Northam's 2015 plans for Big Money.

"The Doomben 10,000 and the Stradbroke look to be lovely races for him," Northam said.

"Winter is the time where he can realistically win a good race instead of running a nice fourth or fifth."
