Prime Thoroughbreds Dispatch Edition 40

Thursday 27 November 2014, 4:37pm

The winners just seem to keep coming with Unique scoring a strong win at Canterbury last Wednesday.  He is developing into a nice horse and as a ½ brother to Happy Trails has the pedigree to go on with it.  Unique may well head to the Stayers Cup on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast in January, a race we won with Hidden Wonder a few years ago.

He is the 4th individual winner for us this season which we purchased from the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale joining Husson Eagle, Rumeron and Atalanta Miss.

We had some other good results with Savoureux being beaten in the last stride at Canterbury.  Hail Maher as is her way threw away a certain victory running 2nd on resuming at Gawler.  She has terrific ability but must improve her very average racing manners if she is to reach her full potential.  Atalanta Miss didn’t disgrace herself running 5th in the $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat on Saturday.

Unique winning at Canterbury

This weekend we haven’t had too much go right with the barriers.  Terra Amata heads to Rosehill but has a tricky gate to overcome.  We decided to scratch Faith’n’Courage in Brisbane after she drew in the car park.  It is just too big an ask to expect a horse run well around the tight circuit from a very poor gate in a competitive race.  Better news for Rumeron with a nice draw in barrier 1 in Hobart on Sunday where she looks nicely placed.

On Wednesday Pitt Street makes his Tasmanian debut in the Newmarket Handicap.  The 1200m may be a bit short for him but it is a nice launching pad for his summer assault.  This will be the 5th state he has raced in.  At the same meeting we have the progressive three year old Bella Venus running.

Next Saturday Hijack Hussy heads to Doomben for the Listed Mode Plate.  Faith’n’Courage is likely to run at the same meeting.  There will be other runners as well with more on that next week.

MAGIC MILLIONS HERE I COME

I must say I have plenty of spring in my step at present as I prepare for the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale that starts in about 6 weeks time.  This is our most important sale of the year and I head to the Hunter to continue preparations about 8 December.  I have a lot of work to do but I am sorting out the first season sires progeny in my head and I am happy where I’m at.  More as we get closer.  I am intending to purchase 6 to 8 yearlings.  Please don’t call to find out where I see the first season sires sitting because I won’t tell you.

We look like having a couple of runners on the day with Hijack Hussy heading to the $1million Three Year Old Classic and Unique the Stayers Cup.  We may have other runners on the day but this depends on results heading towards Magic Millions Day which is Queensland’s richest race day.

I was amazed to read in Breednet that Gai Waterhouse purchased 54 yearlings in January last year for herself and her syndication arm for a total spend of about $10,300,000 or an average of about $190,000 each.  You would hope to get a winner with that sort of outlay!

TASMANIAN SUMMER CARNIVAL

The upcoming Tasmanian Summer Carnival looks like being a ripper.  We have a nice team of horses in place for the Carnival and may add to it as we head forwards.  I will be finalising the costs etc for the events we are attending during the Hobart Cup week and will get those out in December.  We have an dangerous looking team assembling!!!

The changes to the Hobart Cup week are long overdue and a step in the right direction.
