ABOUT US

Richard Kerry & Jarrod Byers, two of Thoroughbred breeding's most accomplished horsemen, have joined forces and established Millford Thoroughbreds in Victoria's prolific north east region.

Both Richard and Jarrod have done the ‘yards’ (literally and metaphorically), forming a close working relationship: firstly at Newlands Thoroughbreds and, until recently, at Paringa Park.

Richard’s 25 year involvement with the industry commenced with a diploma in Horse Management at the Orange/Hawkesbury Agricultural College, followed by a stint at Meringo Stud on NSW’s South Coast, before moving to the Hunter Valley and spending seven years as Arrowfield Stud’s Foaling Unit Manager.

Moving to Victoria as Assistant Manager of Ealing Park, Richard was appointed Stud Manager at Newlands Thoroughbreds, during which time he was involved in every aspect of, firstly, building the farm and, subsequently, building the business.

Richard then landed the role as General Manager of Paringa Park, but when the opportunity arose to take on Millford Thoroughbreds, he dived in with both boots.

“Millford Thoroughbreds is a wonderful opportunity which both Jarrod and I found too good to pass up,” Richard explains. “Based between Avenel and Nagambie, the property is 320 acres of pristine north east real estate and has an abundance of water from its Hughes Creek frontage.

“Ivan and Valda Klaric set the farm up 12 years ago and have done a marvellous job with it. Well appointed paddocks, all post and rail, meshed.

“They must have been doing something right as both multiple Group winner, Mr Martini, and Rosehill Guineas-G1 placegetter and G1 Turnbull Stakes Winner - Littorio were bred and raised on the farm.

“But while it’s been very much a private farm, Jarrod and I plan on taking it to the next step with a lot more development of infrastructure and gearing it right up as a commercial thoroughbred operation.

“We basically provide all services. Millford Thoroughbreds’ proximity to all the major farms makes it ideal for walk ons, we prepare yearlings for sale and foal down mares.

“It’s very exciting for Jarrod and I. We’ve worked together as a close team now for the past six years: Jarrod was a graduate of the Horse Management Course at Wangaratta TAFE and he’s extremely dedicated. He quickly rose to the position of Assistant Stud Manager at Newlands where his responsibilities included both the stallion and broodmare operations and his role at Paringa only intensified.

“We both understand that the Millford Thoroughbreds shingle is going up in a crowded market, but feel that there is always an opening for experience, professionalism and proven real estate.”

Terry Lowis, veterinarian at Millford Thoroughbreds, has worked as resident veterinarian on some of Australias' biggest thoroughbred studs including 7 years at Arrowfield Stud. Terry has also worked for a total of 8 years at Melbourne University as principal lecturer and clinician in equine reproduction. Terry won the Peter Irwin Literary Award for best publication in the Australia Equine Veterinary Journal in 1997 and again in 2006. In 2006 Terry was awarded the prestigious Australian Equine Veterinarians Provet award for significant contribution to the equine veterinary profession. He has worked in equine practice in USA, New Zealand, Turkey, UAE, Japan and Canada and has been servicing local major studs and broodmare farms in the area for the past 6 years in his role as senior partner in the Avenel Equine Clinic. Now servicing the area with his own practice Stud and Stable Veterinarians, bringing a wealth of reproductive and practical experience to our business.
