It was no secret that when Grand Syndicates and David Jolly stepped onto the Magic Millions complex in Adelaide, that we were always going to be heading straight to the draft of the young South Australian sire BARBADOS.
After purchasing a strapping colt from the well-bred sire’s first crop for just $9,000, that would soon turn into our very promising young 3yo BAJAN, the progeny of the impeccably bred stallion was always going to be high on our shopping list once again. The fact that we were able to walk away with what in our opinion was the best colt in the draft of the stallion, and from a stakes-placed, Melbourne city-winning mare, who has already produced a stakes-winner herself, well that was an even better result for Team Grand and our owners.
“Arguably one of the best-bred racehorses in Australia”, the BARBADOS story is an unfortunate one for Darley Racing, but has been a good one for Grand Syndicates, being able to score now 2 well-built and well-bred colts, with type and strength well beyond their price-tags.
By the legendary stallion and sire of sires REDOUTE’S CHOICE, Barbados was born to be a superstar. His multiple G1 winning dam VIRAGE DE FORTUNE was purchased in foal, carrying BARBADOS by the Darley Racing empire for an impressive $3.4 million. Tragically at just 6 months old, Barbados broke his pelvis in a paddock accident, and so was confined to a box for 6 months. Because of his value, he was given a short race career, finishing 2nd on debut in the Rose Quality behind G3 winning and multiple stakes-placed fellow Darley runner BELLO. He then impressively won his next start before his injury and the further complications caused by it caught up with him and he was retired after just 5 starts. Now standing at stud in South Australia, he represents a very affordable way into some elite bloodlines and with runs on the board from his first crop which includes our very own BAJAN.
A strong and correct specimen, this colt was clearly our pick of the entire draft of BARBADOS. An early type with plenty of power, there’s a lot to say that much like BAJAN, who as a 2yo was good enough to be placed in the $100,000 SABOIS 2yo as well as finish close up in the Listed Oaklands Plate over 1400m, this colt should get the opportunity to run early for his owners and stretch out over further as a 3yo.
This colt’s dam is the talented 4-time winner and stakes-placed RAINBIRD BLUE, a mare who on the racetrack, raced in metro and stakes level at 18 of her 19 starts. She was good enough to win twice at Caulfield, as well as being stakes-placed in the Listed Nitschke Stakes and a close up 4th in the Port Adelaide Guineas. As a broodmare, she picked up where she left off on the racetrack, so far producing 4 winners including a black-type winner in LA FANTASTIQUE, the winner of the Tasmanian Oaks. So whether it be as a racehorse or as a broodmare, RAINBIRD BLUE has shown that she is black-type.


To be trained by Grand Syndicates’ South Australian trainer, the G1 winning David Jolly, this colt is also paid up for the lucrative SABOIS bonus scheme, which means that he’ll be racing for extra prizemoney when he graces the track in South Australia. With FULL 5% shares only $2,200 including ALL COSTS TO OCTOBER 2018 and then Grand Syndicates’ “No-Stress” fixed fees at $6.60 a day to cover all costs, it’s an exciting and affordable way to put yourself right where you want to be-in the winner’s circle!
