Pictured above is the very nice Al Maher filly out of the Defensive play mare Play Along (NZ) that I purchased at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale. She has the pedigree to be an Oaks filly as a three year old. She won't be rushed and I have decided to send her to David Hayes to train.
The share has become available due to a syndicate member having to sell due to a serious illness.
Al Maher is a first season sire by the great Danehill. Al Maher competed at the highest level as a two year old and then trained on to be an outstanding three year old winning the VRC Australian Guineas at Group 1 level as well as the STC Group 2 Gloaming Stakes and Group 3 VRC Carbine Club Stakes. He was also placed in some very good races. He is closely related to Redoute's Choice.
While Al Maher is a great asset to this pedigree the strength that Play Along (NZ) brings to the pedigree is hard to match. Firstly, she is by one of Australia's leading broodmare sire of 2007/08 season in Defensive Play. Defensive Play is the broodmare sire of Sirmione, Efficient and Zarita, three of the very best horses racing in Australia. Play Along (NZ) has already done the job with two to race for two winners. Both these horses won at 2000 m or further.
Al Maher is doing a great job at stud and is currently 4th on the second season sires list with his daughters do a great job for him.
Play Along (NZ) is a half sister to the Brisbane Cup winner Sky Flyer, Bagot Handicap winner and 2nd in the Group 1 SA Oaks filly Camilla and the third dam is the broodmare sire of the Adelaide Cup winner Dealer's Choice.
From a future perspective the mare has been well mated. Last year's yearling by Danzero sold for $240,000 and is being trained by Brian Mayfield Smith. She has a weanling colt by Commands and is in foal to Exceed and Excel.
In our endeavour to buy an Oaks filly I doubt if we could have got a better mix and David Hayes is the right man to train the filly. If you are in a hurry don't buy into this filly but if you want the opportunity to race a filly that may take you to the really big days this may be your opportunity.
