Beidi off and running in Canterbury win

Wednesday 23 May 2018, 2:47pm

Beidi has made the ideal start to his racing career with a clinical win at Canterbury for Sydney's leading trainer Chris Waller.

The two-year-old wore down the more experienced Munich as the post loomed to score the TAB.com.au Handicap (1100m) by half a length to please Waller's racing manager Charlie Duckworth.

"We had quite a good opinion of him so I was a little surprised when we saw the price when he came across the line," he said.

"He did everything right and obviously having a good barrier (one) is a massive plus when you're having your first start.

"He jumped well, held his spot, ensured there was a good gallop on up front and he's peeled out and showed a decent turn of foot."

Beidi, who had one trial as preparation, was sent out as an $18 chance but produced a strong-finishing burst under Tye Angland.

Munich, the $2.50 favourite, now seeks to break his maiden for Peter and Paul Snowden while Waller's other newcomer Home Soil ($10) was 2-3/4 lengths third.

Duckworth was unsure where Beidi would venture next for owners Ingham Racing.

"Whether we call it a day for the prep and end on a high or whether we push on is up to the boss."

Angland was impressed after his first sit on Beidi.

"One trial for the Waller camp is not the usual pattern so they obviously thought he goes well," he said.
