Hill remains hospitalised following fall

Tuesday 22 May 2018, 2:34pm

Jockey Jack Hill remains in a Melbourne hospital awaiting surgery following a fall at Wodonga.

Hill was transferred to the Alfred Hospital on Saturday after his fall from Zou York in a 1400m race.

Apprentice Mikaela Lawrence also fell in the incident on the home turn and stayed overnight in a local hospital before being discharged on Sunday.

Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Matt Hyland said Hill received a fractured jaw and a fracture to the C1 vertebra in his neck.

"There was a plan to have an operation on his jaw, but at this stage that has been put on hold," Hyland told RSN927.

"He's got a laceration on his jaw that is going to require some stitches.

"The doctors have taken the collar off his neck.

"He's got a C1 fracture but it was non-displaced which is a good thing but he has been complaining of some neck soreness so that may have to go back on."

Hill was seriously injured in a fall at Donald in March 2015 before making a comeback in December that year.

He was lucky to escape more serious injury in a fall at Morphettville in March this year.

Hyland said with his history of concussion he expects Hill to be on the sidelines for some time but that would be evaluated in consultation with Racing Victoria doctor Gary Zimmerman.

He said Lawrence had escaped pretty much unscathed.

"She's pretty sore all over but hopes to be back on deck later in the week with some rides," he said.
