Alizee makes triumphant Randwick return

Saturday 17 February 2018, 6:38pm

Managing Alizee is a labour of love but it has had its rewards with the Godolphin filly making a triumphant return in the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes at Randwick.

Trainer James Cummings said the headstrong Alizee took a lot of time from his staff but it was worth it to see her win at Randwick on Saturday.

The winner of the Group One Flight Stakes in the spring, Alizee was sent out the $2.15 favourite in the Light Fingers (1200m) and lived up to her billing when she held off Shumookh ($7) by a head.

"She is not the easiest horse to manage. The guys all come together and it takes a lot of energy from everyone," Cummings said.

"She's a Group One-winning filly from the spring and has a big preparation ahead.

"Everyone can be satisfied."

Torvill ($101) finished a short neck behind Shumookh with last year's Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic fourth and New Zealander Melody Belle fifth with both making ground from behind.

Cummings said Alizee's jockey Glyn Schofield was an essential part of the team.

"Glyn knows her," he said.

"He listens to instructions and is a great asset for a trainer/jockey combination."

Schofield said although Alizee could be a handful, he was always in control.

"She travelled keenly but it was always comfortable," he said.

"She was full of energy and when the run presented I had to let her go and it was quite soft in the end."

Cummings said Alizee would head to the Group One Surround Stakes (1400m) in two weeks.
