Transporter in upset Gold Coast Stakes win

Saturday 18 March 2017, 4:59pm

Difficult to train Transporter appreciated the return to his pet distance of 1800m and gave trainer Lindsay Hatch his biggest win in the $100,000 Gold Coast Stakes on Saturday.

Transporter won his first start back from a spell at $71 but had failed badly at his two runs since.

On Saturday, Transporter was again the bookmakers' pin up boy when he started at $31.

The giant gelding, who is more than 17 hands, beat the outsider of the field Kalandula ($41) by two lengths with 3/4 of a length to the unlucky Fast Arrow ($5) in third.

Hatch said he had a lot of problems with Transporter, who was difficult to train because of leg problems.

"I thought I had him right this week and he does go well at this trip and on soft tracks," Hatch said.

"To be honest I have never weighed him but I have a few other things to worry about with him."

Hatch said Transporter would now start in the Listed Toowoomba Cup (2000m) on April 8.

"It is a race I would love to win being a Darling Downs-based trainer," he said.

Hatch has been recovering from bowel cancer surgery and the win was a great boost for him.

One of the first to congratulate Hatch was his close friend and leading trainer Tony Gollan.

Hatch trains from the Barham training complex and Gollan often sends his horses there to use the facilities.

"I have been feeling good since the surgery and this is a boost," Hatch said.

Transporter has now had six starts at 1800m for four wins and two minor placings.

Jim Byrne said his mount Kalandula had appreciated the soft conditions and ran her best race for some time.
