Suspension sours Bolozhinskyi's Sydney win

Wednesday 17 August 2016, 5:45pm

Country apprentice Vad Bolozhinskyi has had a bittersweet day, riding his first winner on a Sydney track only to be handed a three-meeting careless riding suspension.

Bolozhinskyi guided It's A Shamozzle to victory in the More Than Just Winning Handicap (1550m), his only ride at Canterbury on Wednesday.

But the winning performance drew the ire of stewards who penalised him for shifting out at the home turn and causing interference.

It's a Shamozzle's Scone-based trainer Mary Moses, who also strapped and part-owns the horse, was on the verge of tears when the Ukrainian-born mature-age apprentice won.

"He doesn't get many opportunities and people don't have faith in his riding ability but when he knows a horse, he will give it the best opportunity," Moses said.

Bolozhinskyi's first metropolitan win also came on It's A Shamozzle during the city-grade Scone Cup carnival in May 2014.
