Ryan ruing another wide gate for Marley

The best-laid plans of Don't Doubt Marley's owners have been thwarted by bad barriers since she came to Sydney.

The filly was transferred from Robbie Griffiths in Victoria to Gerald Ryan in Sydney so her Newcastle-based group of owners could see her race more often.

But in three of four runs for her new trainer, Don't Doubt Marley has had her chances hampered by wide alleys and she was withdrawn from Canterbury on Monday because of the same problem.

Things aren't much better in Saturday's Schweppes Hcp (1200m) at Rosehill but Ryan is happy to entrust Kerrin McEvoy to get her in a good position from gate nine of 10.

"She is really bright and well but since I've had her she just keeps drawing wide barriers all the time," Ryan said.

"I took her out of Canterbury on Monday because she had 17 of 17 but in a smaller field at Rosehill, hopefully it won't be too bad.

"Her owners are from Newcastle and they brought her up here so they got to see her race.

"But I would like to see her have some luck with the barriers."

Despite the barrier, Don't Doubt Marley is on the TAB's third line of betting at $7 with the Gai Waterhouse-trained stakes-placed Flamboyant Lass favourite at $5 for her first race since January.

Flamboyant Lass, who has had three barrier trials to get ready for her return, boasts a win over subsequent Group One winner Counterattack in their two-year-old days.

Ryan will also saddle up youngster Smart Venture hoping she has more luck in the TAB Rewards Hcp (1350m) than at her first two starts.

Both times she has finished unplaced in races win by the Michael Freedman-trained Henry The Createth and both times has been checked or hampered.

"She's a really nice filly but she struggled on the heavy track last time," Ryan said.

"We'll give her this start and send her for a break."
