Short break in Qld for Stradbroke winner

Monday 13 June 2016, 3:39pm

Stradbroke Handicap winner Under The Louvre will enjoy a short break in the Queensland sun before being prepared for a Melbourne spring campaign.

Trainer Robert Smerdon said the five-year-old would not be afforded the opportunity of a long break with the spring carnival on the doorstep.

He said he would look at the program to determine a suitable early target for the gelding who beat Black Heart Bart to win Brisbane's premier race on Saturday.

"He's already in the paddock enjoying a break," Smerdon said.

"But he won't get that long because the spring comes around quite quickly.

"We'll possibly look at something like the Manikato Stakes for him as the 1200 (metres) around Moonee Valley might just suit him."

The Stradbroke win turned the fortunes of Under The Louvre in Group One races around.

He had finished in the placings at his four previous Group One starts, including twice in to Goodwoods at Morphettville in Adelaide and twice on his home track at Caulfield in Melbourne.

Smerdon said if he had been successful in one of those earlier Group One races the gelding would most likely not have won Saturday's 1400m feature.

"The Stradbroke was worth almost four times as much as one of the Caulfield races, so we're quite happy to take the money," he said.
