Jumbo Prince to back up in Ipswich Cup

Monday 13 June 2016, 1:15pm

Jumbo Prince is expected to run in the Ipswich Cup seven days after a luckless run at Eagle Farm.

The Michael Nolan-trained four-year-old finished 14th of 17 runners in Saturday's Wayne Wilson Mile, 6-1/2 lengths from the winner Hopfgarten.

But his jockey Jim Byrne said the race was best forgotten.

"He got caught deep and they walked in front," Byrne said.

"Forget the run. I expect to ride him in the Ipswich Cup if he recovers well."

Nominations for Saturday's Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) have been extended with just 10 entries taken on Monday.

Veteran Brave Ali finished just in front of Jumbo Prince but will be saved for the Tattersall's Cup a week after Ipswich with his trainer Tony Gollan planning an assault on next month's Grafton Cup.

"Brave Ali wasn't suited the way the race was run on Saturday as there was little pace early. Provided he recovers OK we will press on with his campaign," Gollan said.

Now a rising 10-year-old, Brave Ali won the Ipswich Cup in 2014.

"He is obviously getting near the end of his career and I think the Grafton Cup will be his ultimate goal," Gollan said.

Chris Waller, who trained Danchai to win the race last year, has entered Dance Of Heroes and Beyond Thankful.

"Dance Of Heroes is likely to go because he should get a good track," Waller said.

"But Beyond thankful needs it wet so he will stay in Sydney."

There are 16 entries for the Listed sprint on the program, the Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) including last-start Sandown winner Odyssey Moon from the stable of Stradbroke Handicap-winning trainer Robert Smerdon.
