No claim for Ben Allen at provincials

Sunday 15 May 2016, 5:32pm

Apprentice Ben Allen rapid rise has been temporarily halted by a careless riding suspension.

After he has served the ban from May 17 to 24, the 17-year-old will return without a claim on non-metropolitan tracks.

Allen showed class beyond his years when he guided Gingie to victory in the Comdain Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday, earning high praise from trainer Ciaron Maher.

"He does a bit with the stable," Maher said.

"He's got a good family and he's obviously going the right way."

Allen began riding in April last year and scored his first winner that month. At just his 12th ride, he broke his wrist in a fall at Geelong.

That put him on the sidelines for three months but the youngster hasn't looked back since his return.

Allen has now ridden 82 winners, seven of which have come in the metropolitan area, and he has a 3kg claim in town until he rides another 13 winners.

"It's gone pretty quick. It's gone a lot quicker than I expected," Allen said.

"I only started riding 12 months ago.

"I took my time coming back from my injury as I wanted to let my wrist heal."

Unfortunately the Geelong careless riding suspension has come at the wrong time for Allen as he transitions into riding without a claim in the bush.

"It will be a bit hard but we'll work through it," Allen said.

"Coming into winter a lot of the good riders go on holidays and that gives apprentices a chance to have a go in town."
