Rupert bows out on Winning note at Doomben

Saturday 14 May 2016, 3:23pm

Winning Rupert is unlikely to have another start in the winter despite continuing trainer Bjorn Baker's great recent run of success at Doomben.

Heavily backed from $7.50 into $5, Winning Rupert made it two wins from as many starts in the Group Two Champagne Classic (1200m) on Saturday.

Ridden near the pace by in-form Jeff Lloyd, Winning Rupert held on in the straight to beat Attention ($16) by a short neck with a nose to Souchez ($5) in third.

Stable spokesman Jack Bruce said it was unlikely Winning Rupert would run in the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes.

"Bjorn thinks he will make a really nice three-year-old. He has always had a huge opinion of Winning Rupert but we don't want to push him too far," Bruce said.

He said a final decision would not be made until early next week after he had a discussion with Baker.

Lloyd was also urging caution with Winning Rupert, who he also won on at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

"He is a big horse with a heap of ability. Both his starts have been from wide barriers and we have had to ride him forward," Lloyd said.

"I think he will be some horse when he comes back."

Baker has started the winter carnival in great form claiming a feature double at the Gold Coast last week.
