Upstart Prides chases Weetwood Hcp berth

Wednesday 6 April 2016, 3:30pm

Connections are hoping brilliant sprinter Upstart Pride can sneak into the field for next week's Listed Weetwood Handicap after his record-breaking win at Ipswich.

Starting favourite, Upstart Pride ($1.80) clocked 56.29secs to take 0.33secs off the 1000m course record when beating Charge Missile by 4-1/4 lengths ($4.60).

Trainer Michael Nolan said if Upstart Pride didn't get a start in the Weetwood at Toowoomba, the sprinter would run in a support race on the same day.

"We were going to run him last Saturday in an open handicap but thought today's race would be better first-up," Nolan said.

"If he gets into the Weetwood he will be hard to beat but there looks like being a capacity field."

Upstart Pride, who is raced and bred by the Toowoomba Turf Club chairman Bob Frappell, has always shown potential but has run into regular trouble in his career.

Nolan will have one definite Weetwood runner as his Group One-placed gelding Jumbo Prince is earmarked to return in the race.

Jockey Jeff Lloyd picked up the Upstart Pride ride when Jim Byrne was injured on Tuesday.

"Upstart Pride was cruising on the corner and they were never going to get near him," he said.

Deagon galloper Otto From Hamburg ($15) proved good things come in small packages when he won on Wednesday.

"I can't remember taking too many smaller geldings to the races but he hit the line like he did in his two trial wins and he did a good job at his first race start today," said trainer Darren Bell.
