Ex-Moody runner wins Mornington feature

Saturday 2 April 2016, 4:55pm

Darren Weir admitted that he couldn't take too much credit for Thermal Current's Mornington win.

The gelding arrived at Weir's stables after the suspension and subsequent closure of Peter Moody's training business.

Thermal Current is part-owned by Racing Victoria chairman David Moodie and is the first horse he has raced out of the successful Weir stable.

"It's just trot and catered for 10 days," Weir said.

"Thanks to the owners for giving us a go with the horse and a big thanks to Pete for having him in great order for us."

Ridden by apprentice Harry Coffey, Thermal Current ($6) took out the Hareeba Stakes on Saturday from Precious Gem ($31) by a half neck with Dan Zephyr ($8) a half head away third.

"Pete's been terrific with the information for where these horses are in their preparations and the races he was targeting them for," Weir said.

"With David Moodie as well, I had a chat with him, the races they had picked out were the Hareeba and the VOBIS Gold race in a couple of weeks."

Thermal Current was sent to Weir's Warrnambool stable which the trainer said was an invaluable asset for his training business, especially with older horses.

Weir said he had received between 15 and 20 horses after Moody's decision to step away from training.

"Some of the horses we got, we train for those owners as well which made it an easy transition," he said.
