Carbine result a pointer to 2017 Doncaster

Saturday 2 April 2016, 1:51pm

He's Our Rokkii's win over a mile on Doncaster day has co-trainer David Hayes excited about his prospects in the main race next year.

The gelding tasted Group Three success in the Carbine Club Stakes winning by a half length from Odyssey Moon at Randwick on Saturday.

He's Our Rokkii, a $6 chance, took up a position behind the leader on the rail before accelerating to hold off a challenge from the $3.70 favourite Odyssey Moon.

Queen Of Wands ($12) took the minor placing.

The win was enough to convince Hayes he should target next year's Doncaster Mile with the three-year-old.

"He'll have a lovely weight next year and he's a big powerful miler," Hayes said.

Hayes said He's Our Rokkii would have been well placed in the Australian Guineas but his course had been set with an eye to the future.

"We decided to go the softer route," Hayes said.

"We're treating him with a real four-year-old view."

He's Our Rokkii's next assignment will be in two weeks at Randwick in the Frank Packer Plate over 2000m.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn said He's Our Rokkii had the quality to be a Group One performer.

"David and I had had a little plan just to keep flying him under the radar," Dunn said.

"We're just trying to give him a bit of confidence on the way through."
