Weight's right for Munce's Wicked Intent

Friday 1 April 2016, 11:19am

Speedy three-year-old Wicked Intent will benefit from Brisbane's rating handicap system as he continues his winter carnival build-up at Doomben.

Wicked Intent became only the third three-year-old in a decade and the first in three years to win an open company handicap in Brisbane two weeks ago.

The gelding carried 53kg, after apprentice Matt McGillivray's claim, with McGillivray to again ride Wicked Intent who will carry the same weight on Saturday.

The gelding has escaped a penalty for his win because Saturday's race has more highly rated horses than his previous start.

Trainer Chris Munce hopes the weight will help overcome what is a tricky barrier for Wicked Intent in the Love You Lauren Dooley Handicap (1110m).

"There is a bit of pace drawn inside him but we should be able to get across and either get cover or sit on the leader," Munce said.

"He still has some tightening up to do but I expect him to race well again."

Wicked Intent was brilliant first-up, running 59.88 seconds for 1050m, a fraction outside the course record.

"He has to go a bit further this time but I would expect him to run at least a strong 1200 metres," Munce said.

"This time last year he finished second in a Group Two race (the Champagne Classic) at 1200," Munce said.

Wicked Intent will run in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m) on April 23 before Munce decides on a full winter campaign.

McGillivray was stood down ill before the last race at Ipswich on Wednesday but expects to be fit to ride on Saturday.
